Launched in partnership with Refik Anadol Studio and The Museum of Modern Art following Unsupervised (2021), Refik Anadol’s solo exhibition on Feral File, this collaboration took place online during MoMA’s Burn Weekend (May 19–21, 2023). Our activation invited participants to “burn” previously collected artworks from Anadol’s sold-out exhibition in exchange for exclusive NFTs and physical works. The event included tiered levels of participation, and offered a suite of curated rewards to those who chose to burn their Anadol NFTs — including 2D and 3D prints, unique digital artworks, and MoMA day passes. The highest participation tier also offered a chance to receive a unique, highly coveted AI data painting from Anadol’s Machine Hallucinations — MoMA Dreams series.
This activation was an outstanding success, resulting in 1,620 MoMA — Data Universe NFTs being burned. It demonstrated how artists can engage their collector communities by making an existing, popular collection available in innovative ways, and how museums can leverage blockchain-based tools to connect more deeply with their audiences.
