30 seconds, loopSurrealism was an art movement that probed the subconscious, dreams, fantasies, and desires via an exquisite visual vocabulary. As an homage to female surrealists such as Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington, Pinar Yoldas’ “Hollow Ocean” creates a painterly space for reflecting on the future of life. Life evolved in the ocean, and almost all life begins its journey in liquid environments. There exists a possible future where all ocean life is gone (actually, according to science, there’s a deadline for that and it is 2048). The piece stands between hollow structures of death and fluid structures of life: embryos, amniotic fluid, saltwater, and the primordial ooze.
