Amber starts as resin oozing from trees which, under the right conditions, becomes fossilized through a natural hardening process called polymerization. In pieces of amber, which can be hundreds of millions of years old, humans have found such treasures as extinct plant species found nowhere else, and the oldest evidence we have of sexual reproduction in flowering plants.
In “Human-Era Flora in Amber,” Rodell Warner questions how long information about us, preserved in our polymerized 3D prints — whether transmitted by the content or the medium of our outputs — will be available after our deaths. Could the 3D printed doppelganger of this digital artwork turn up 100 million years from now, carrying a message?
