The collaboration between the Gee’s Bend quilters and artist Anna Lucia communicates a rich set of themes and histories, connecting algorithmic computation with the recombinative processes of quilt making. “Generations” has led me to consider the storied history of textiles, computing, decorative arts and gender, themes that feature across several of Anna’s artworks. Anna specifically looked at the work of Gee’s Bend quilters Louisiana P. Bendolph, Loretta Pettway Bennett, Essie Bendolph Pettway, and Lucy T. Pettway (deceased), who was represented by her daughter and quilter Mary Margaret Pettway. Craft (decorative metal work) is an important part of my own art practice, and having considered how motif and rhythm relate to generative abstraction, the artworks made by Gee’s Bend quilters speak to me strongly on a personal level. Released in May 2023 through Arsnl Art, I believe “Generations” is aptly titled; not only a reminder that generative processes abound in the decorative arts, but of the capacity for craft (whether code or quilts) to act as a focal point for social activity, as well as cultural expression and preservation. — 0xDEAFBEEF
