Under the larger project, Becoming Illegible, which engages with both social media face filters and facial recognition, Sarah Friend’s “Mirror Studies #1” is an interactive browser-based facefilter. Placing the facefilter form in dialogue with idealized ecological imagery, this work translates the questions of how we become legible to machine learning into the arena of how a landscape becomes legible to society. These images of landscapes and faces blend together — at times familiar and recognizable, at others alien, Cthulhu-like, and abstract.
