Ecotone - Art exhibition on Feral File

Curator’s Note

The Creator Ecology

An “ecotone” is a region of transition between two biological communities which is richer in species than both.1 Our exhibition Ecotone distills the creative outflows of the Glitch community of artists and technologists. This growing network considers digital and natural ecologies to be innately entangled, with cross-border collaboration a vital means of generating new social realities. Involving over 60 participants from around the world, Glitch is a spectrum of strategies and a model for a new creator ecology — artistic, poetic, and human-machinic. For this show with Feral File, Glitch is represented by a number of leading artists, whose range of approaches reflects the plurality of the community. Their works are the product of cross-pollination, and so a number of non-exhibitors have chosen to share their words here.
Glitch is the scientists’ explanation of how life came into existence by a series of progressive chemical reactions and not by an act of God. But then, observe how we come together and merge creativity, our will, and the power of love to make the world a better place. Suddenly, we realize that we have created something new that survives us. The unpredictable timing of creative completion is proof of a divine force at play: it must be the Glitch. — Yessin Schiegg
Glitch means multi-species connections, re-imagining nature and cities, and how we can find common ground in both our physical and digital states, in our cyborg bodies, aware of our own viscosity and our uncanniness, to form a network of solidarity. Glitch urges every cell of our anti-body to move and create in a constant state of interconnectivity. To me, that means restlessly sharing knowledge and creating experiences which encourage radical and sensual play. — Leonie Schramm

Kalen Iwamoto avatar

LocationLyon, France

Kalen Iwamoto is a conceptual crypto writer and artist exploring the possibilities of literature on the blockchain. Her work takes blockchain technology and crypto culture as its point of departure, and focuses on playfulness, exploration, and experimentation to push the boundaries of the NFT medium and of conceptual writing and art. Always faithful to the concepts that drive her pieces, she uses various forms and media — micro autofiction, multimedia poetry, metaversal word art installations — to experiment with new writing and reading experiences. Kalen is also the founder of the crypto writers discord and cofounder of theVERSEverse, a literary gallery where poems = works of art.

LocationParis, France

aurèce vettier is a studio founded by Paul Mouginot in 2019. The studio aims to understand how to achieve relevant and meaningful interactions with machines and algorithms, in order to push the boundaries of creative processes. The works of aurèce vettier are the result of a number of back-and-forth trips between the “real” space in which we exist, where we can draw, paint, sculpt, break, erase; and the “data” space, where we can play in more dimensions than we, as humans, can cope with. In this virtual space, which can involve artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms or heavy mathematical processing, the studio expands possibilities, exploring new forms that can be projected back in reality. What is generated by AI and algorithms is not regarded as finished work, but rather as raw material that expands the artist’s conceptual possibilities.

Iannis Bardakos avatar

LocationShanghai, China

Iannis Bardakos is a hunter-gatherer of forms and non-localities. He is in a non-linear oscillation between Athens, Paris, and Shanghai, where he manifests as an artist, researcher, and educator. As an artist, he combines virtual, physical, and biological media while exploring the way forms, ideas, and concepts emerge in individuals and in groups of human and non-human observational units. As a researcher, he is exploring the ways the self, the mind, mathematics, and aesthetics create rational and irrational poetic bonds. As an educator, Iannis Bardakos is on a continuous journey to understand, via technoetic methodologies, how art processes emerge.

ORLAN

LocationParis, France

ORLAN is one of the most important French artists internationally recognized. She is not tied to any one material, technology, or artistic practice. She uses sculpture, photography, performance, video, 3D, video games, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and robotics (she has created a robot in her own image that speaks with her voice), as well as scientific and medical techniques such as surgery and biotechnology, to question the social phenomena of our time. ORLAN created the magazine Art-Accès Revue, on minitel, and founded and organized the International Symposium of Performance and Video in Lyon. ORLAN constantly and radically changes the data, deregulating conventions and ready-made thinking. She opposes natural, social, and political determinism, all forms of domination, male supremacy, religion, cultural segregation, and racism. Always mixed with humor, sometimes parody and even the grotesque, her work questions social phenomena and challenges pre-established codes.
