Jakob Kudsk Steensen’s “Frozen Fern Genitalia, 52°03'08.7"N 13°52'34.4"E” shows part of a 3D scanned frozen fern, as well as the coordinates at which it was scanned. The piece was created with photogrammetry using 1200 images taken by the artist in the snow over the course of two days. The result is a photo-scan made with a human body, which moved around the plant during the winter of 2021 in Spreewald, an area south of Berlin. The work focuses on the reproductive organs of the plant, contrasted with its digital format and the physical process of creating the image. It results in an ultra form of slow media, where several weeks were spent creating a single image, contrasting the speedy behaviors we more often see in digital space today. It also insists on worlds beyond the virtual, by relying entirely on organic material encountered across swamps surrounding Berlin.
