About a2p

a2p was an artist-to-artist exchange run on the Bitmark blockchain in two seasons, Fall 2019 and Spring 2020. Each invited artist issued one new work as an edition of ten plus one artist proof, and for a week the group traded editions with each other, so that every artist ended with a collection of their peers' work. Feral File grew out of a2p; the works are shown here as they were issued, season by season, with their artists and the curators who selected them.

What a stewarded collection is

A stewarded collection is work Feral File stewards for an initiative that no longer operates. a2p was not a Feral File exhibition: it predates the company, nothing was sold, and the artists chose their own works. The pages make no claim of authorship. Each season is listed as it ran, with the artists and the curators who invited them, and each work carries the artist's own description where the upload preserved one.

The record

The first season, Fall 2019, was selected by Casey Reas, Addie Wagenknecht, Rick Silva and exonemo: 76 works, uploaded in October 2019 and traded over the following week. The second, Spring 2020, was selected by Casey Reas, Iris Long and Carol Sabbadini: 68 works, uploaded in April and May 2020. The ownership of every edition was recorded on the Bitmark blockchain, which Bitmark retired in 2025 and preserved as a verifiable archive; the a2p site's own record of each edition's last owner is kept with the works. The files are served from the a2p site's own host and are held on Feral File's archival node.

The Bitmark chain was retired in 2025. Feral File re-minted 124 of the works on Ethereum that February, one token per edition on two contracts (a2p-v1, a2p-v2), and holds the tokens of editions whose owners never came for them. Nineteen other works had been re-released on Ethereum in 2023 as The Experiment, a Feral File exhibition with its own pages.

From Casey Reas's statement, Fall 2019

"We are running an experiment called a2p. It's a speculative exploration into new ways of distributing and sharing digital images, videos, and animations. We're a group of artists selected by four artist/curators: myself, Rick Silva, Addie Wagenknecht, and exonemo (SEMBO Kensuke and AKAIWA Yae). Each of us has created a new artwork and has released it as an edition of ten along with one artist proof. We're across many time zones and continents, but for one week, we'll occupy a shared online space where we'll trade work. It's a performance, but also a way of sharing our work with fellow artists and a way to think about what happens to the work after it's made. It's an artist-to-artist system to build and curate a collection of work."

"We place this project in the tradition of artists working outside of the market. We take direct inspiration from early net.art and with a longer view, from Fluxus. Many of us don't have a gallery that represents our work and for those of us that do, we often can't afford to collect that work. This experiment is a way for us to trade works to create a collection."

The full statement, the FAQ and the chat log of each trading week are kept with the record.

144 works by 142 artists across 2 releases, 1,440 editions, listed as stewarded collections.

Rosa Menkman avatar
Rosa Menkman is an artist and researcher from the Netherlands. Her work focuses on noise artifacts that result from accidents and glitches in both analogue and digital media. She believes that the results of these accidents offer important insights into the otherwise obscure alchemy of “standardization via resolutions,” which is a process that generally imposes efficiency, order, and functionality on our technologies. This process of standardization does not just involve the creation of protocols and solutions, but also entails the obfuscation and black-boxing of alternative possibilities—which, as a result, are in danger of being forgotten or forever unseen. Through her research, which is both practice-based and theoretical, she intends to uncover these anti-utopic, lost, and unseen or simply “too good to be implemented” resolutions as a way to understand, use, and perceive the world through our technologies.

Shu Lea Cheang avatar

LocationParis, France

Shu Lea Cheang (Chinese: 鄭淑麗) (she, her) is a Taiwanese-American artist and filmmaker. Since the 1980s, as a multimedia and new-media artist, she has navigated topics of ethnic stereotyping, sexual politics, and institutional oppression with her radical experimentations in digital realms. She drafts sci-fi narratives in her film scenario and artwork imagination, crafting her own “science” fiction genre of new queer cinema. Cheang is regarded as a pioneering figure in internet-based art, with her multimedia approach at the interface between film, video, internet-based installation, software interaction, and durational performance. Her project “Brandon” (1998–1999) was the first piece of web art commissioned and collected by the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Her work employs film, video, net-based installation, and interface to explore “...ethnic stereotyping, the nature and excesses of popular media, institutional—and especially governmental—power, race relations, and sexual politics.” Cheang has written and directed the feature films I.K.U., Fluidø, and the upcoming UKI. Cheang received a BA in history from the National Taiwan University in 1976 and an MA in Cinema Studies from New York University in 1979.

Nicolas Sassoon avatar

LocationVancouver, Canada

Nicolas Sassoon lives and works in Vancouver, Canada, on the unceded lands of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. His work has long been concerned with the tensions between the pixel and the screen, reflecting on their materiality by integrating pixelated figures, moiré patterns, and early computer graphics into experiential displays. This focus on early computer graphics is driven by the sculptural, material, and pictorial qualities of this imagery, as well as its limitations and its poetics. Sassoon’s work often explores the projective dimensions of screen-based space, and the many relationships between computer technology and the natural world. His research has led him to engage in cross-disciplinary projects in the fields of architecture, electronic music, textiles, and art. His work has been exhibited at The Whitney Museum of American Art (U.S.), Eyebeam (U.S.), Current Museum (U.S.), Vancouver Art Gallery (CA), Plugin ICA (CA), Contemporary Art Gallery (CA), Charles H.Scott Gallery (CA), Western Front (CA), PRETEEN Gallery (MX), Victoria & Albert Museum (UK), the Centre Pompidou (FR), House of Electronic Basel (SW), Arti et Amicitiae (NL), MU Eindhoven (NL) , Today Art Museum (CN), Chronus Art Center (CN), Berlin Fashion Week (DE), and New York Fashion Week (U.S.).

Kim Asendorf avatar
Kim Asendorf is a German visual artist who works with conceptual strategies and generative systems to create abstract animations, images and sculptures. The pixel is the main building block in Asendorf's work, seemingly alive in his abstractions, or rearranged in his iconic Pixel Sorting aesthetics. His abstract visual systems are conceptually set and realized in algorithms that are open to a wide range of interpretations. He is working on a per-pixel level to create worlds that mix simplicity with complexity, that never sleep, and that can put the viewer in a mesmerizing state. He loves to experiment, is driven by curiosity, and finds satisfaction when the results of his work surprise himself. With roots in Net Art, he likes to keep his work easily accessible, and the Internet is his favorite canvas.

Zach Blas

LocationToronto, Canada

Zach Blas is an artist, filmmaker, and writer whose practice spans installation, moving image, computation, theory, and performance.
